The berimbau originated in southwest Angola (Africa), and was brought over to South America by enslaved people. It is now closely associated with the Brazilian dance art of capoeira.

Berimbaus, which are a vital part of capoeira, have started to be used in other types of music, such as electronica, jazz, and rock.
