It is not clear where the cuica came from. Guesses include enslaved Bantu people, Spain, and/or merchants from Muslim nations. Today, however, it is primarily played in Brazil.
The cuica is a "friction drum"--it is played by pushing and pulling a small stick set into the middle of the drumhead, which creates a unique sound.
