This instrument became popular in the Scotch-Irish communities of the Appalachian mountains in the 19th century. The strings are plucked rather than hit.

We have no idea where the Appalachian dulcimer originated before it was brought to the Americas. It is totally unrelated to the hammered dulcimer, except for the fact they both have strings!
